mouseling's 100 questions for webmasters
these 100 quetsions are from mouseling, you can get the blank template here.
- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- my name's damien, but i go by 'prince' online these days, i'm an autistic trans man nerding out about many things and might be a vampire in disguise.
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- i started coding my neocities website on june 7th 2024, though I had dabbled in customising html code a little bit on tumblr back in 2013 onwards (when tumblr made it more obvious that you had an actual website you could code and people used to make and share templates).
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- i'd seen posts on tumblr for a while about neocities and got curious because i've always loved just looking at websites and images online like they're mini art galleries. it's just something that's always been fun for me. and after finally looking into what neocities was, and browsing other people's websites and seeing how cool and pretty they are, i wanted to try it too.
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- when there's clear love put into it. when people have shrines dedicated to anything and everything, doesn't matter if it's a thing i like or not, I find it fascinating to see what other people like and make webshrines for. i also love looking at graphics collections and toy boxes and pixel clubs.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- i actually find it the most helpful to sketch out on paper what i want the basic layout of a page to be, write down what boxes and information i want to include, and then i code it and figure out more decorative elements and colours as i go.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- sites that are the reason i started making a website:
hillhouse>,
key's clubhouse,
spirit cellar,
jojjo,
shishka,
oddity commoddity,
daniele's website,
sweet charm,
artwork
sites that i found after I started making my website that inspire me: clownfred, star thorns, rabbitnet, melody nomás, mudflower, feeling machine, nyaa, pop'n music database, moogle boogles, ne0n bandit, lilth dev, solaria's webspace, toyhamu, spark-web, lazer bunny, butcher--bird's nest, hellmouth, goblincat, aster's archive
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- all of it? i like planning out my pages, coding them (though i don't love when i want loads of images on a page and then have to code them all in), looking at them. this entire process is such a fun, creative outlet for me.
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- coding. i can do enough in it to have a working site, but it takes a lot of help from looking at other people's codes, tutorials. i struggle with my memory and so i rarely ever remember even the most basic parts of coding and have a txt document open at all times with basic snippets in for me to copy and paste. i've gotten a lot better at reading code and understanding what does what, but i feel like i'm not good enough at it to make an entire page without the bones of someone else's free template at the base of it.
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- a few pages have the same layout where it makes sense (each month in my art gallery), or when a page isn't super important to me (my updates page and this questionaire page), but i love making different layouts and themes for different pages, especially making my webshrines have different layouts. the one i'm the most proud of coding layout wise is my webshrine for ares from hades (the video game) where the layout is based on the boon menu from the game.
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- i don't know. i know what some things do, i'm always learning more, and as per question 8 my memory struggles make it hard to remember any css elements without having to look them up every time.
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- i don't know what that means.
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- i don't? have one?
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- sketch out ideas for the layout in my sketchbook and then... open the barebones template i made from editing sadgrl's layout generator... so not entirely from scratch is it...
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- not well. there's a few pages on my website with javascript on, but they were all made with the help of tutorials or other people's free javascript code. i wouldn't be able to write my own javascript code.
- 15. How about PHP?
- i don't know what that means.
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- the theme is just me and what i like. and what i like is a big range of different things and aesthetics.
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- i think both. as an artist i love making the page look pretty, but there's no point in a pretty page with nothing on it. though sometimes writing up text for some pages, like my oc descriptions... i don't enjoy doing because i find describing someone's appearance and personality very difficult.
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- i don't. and i don't care too? doesn't owning a domain cost money? i don't know if it's expensive, maybe i'm under the wrong impression that it is expensive and therefor not worth my money.
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- i have the ability to like any website, whatever the aesthetic, as long as it doesn't have things i'm uncomfy with on it.
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- i don't know what that means... maybe i should. i just code for fun and my website works so... i wouldn't even know how to find out what that means, or if it's something i should worry about.
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- i love web graphics! i love making them and collecting them and finding new ones!
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- yummy eye candy! bonus points if they're organised by colour.
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- the exact same thing. i'd never start over this website.
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- no. i'm not someone experiences envy. if i see something cool that someone else made, i just think it's cool. and maybe it's something that i think would look cool on my website, but if i think that then i'll just... make my own verion of it for my website. to be envious to me kinda implies i would just want their thing to be mine, and i wouldn't, i want to make my own things. the fun of my website is that it's mine.
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- ...i code directly in the neocities editor
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- ...because when i started i didn't know other things were an option and by the time i found out about other options i was already too used to the neocities editor for my autistic brain to ever let me switch to a different on.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- directly in my neocities files. it never occured to me to use an image hoster because what if the image hoster goes down? and yeah, i'm in the uk, and imgur and imgbb are blocked here. when i look at people's websites where they use imgur to host all their images... i can't see any of the images (unless i use the magic of a vpn). they all just appear as error placeholder images and it makes websites unviewable.
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- i think it's silly? just use whichever one you want. i use neocities because i didn't even know nekoweb existed until i'd already been using neocities for months and didn't see the point in switching. and there's more options out there than just neocities and nekoweb. if someone refuses to look at someone's site or thinks their site must be bad because they used neocities/nekoweb… then i think that's just silly.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- as i'm writing this (9pm October 28th 2026) my site is using 4.21 GB which is 8.4% of my neocities storage.
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- yes.
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- highly visual as long as they don't have flashing lights/backgrounds. i love looking at things, parsing through images like little treasure troves.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- not for webshrines as i want those to reflect the colours of whatever the webshrine is about, but for my homepage and other pages that are more about me, yes. red, black, white, silver. those are just my favourite colours to wear, and it suits the whole vampire theme.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- nope. it's too much fun.
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- i got a couple friends into starting to code their own websites, and i've become mutuals with sites i really admire on neocities.
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- yeah. i don't hide my nerdy interests from my friend and partner, they're all nerds too.
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- i try too. i took a few months off this year (2026) because i moved, and i considered that a big break because usually i update it at least once a month.
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- nope. i'm autistic and i don't like change. my homepage has changed layout once, but kept the same aesthetic and colours. i've then slowly added to it, and i've had plans of more things i want to add to it for a long while. i'll add or take away tiny pieces of decoration, but i never plan on changing the entire thing.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- myself, my hobbies, my interests, and my creations.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- no.
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- no. this is a fun hobby for me (and i know i'll never be good at it to do it for a job). for a living i make comfort and erotic audio roleplays, and sell my art. and that does well enough to pay the bills and bought me and my partner a house.
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- not unless it's the only way to contact a business.
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- yes. i've been on tumblr since 2012-ish and i can never leave. also i have to use social media for my work.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- i started using discord in 2017 and overall it's had a very positive impact on my life. it's the first time i met trans people and allowed myself to figure out my own gender. i've made many friends and met my partner on discord. and run my own discord server.
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- yes. and i have a massive range of music tastes so most anything (vocaloid, game soundtracks, prog rock, pop, metal, vkei jrock, kpop, musical theatre, and more).
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- everything is on this website. i also run another neocities site that is a wiki for european musicals that is on hiatus as coding every page entry will take a very long time. the only other websites i have plans for are ones dedicated to specific art projects.
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- many.
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- i can't really construct a persona that is different from my real personality as my autism just doesn't know how, and if i tried i'd slip character all the time because of the autism. my visual persona isn't much different from how i look irl either because i just can't make one that looks different from me without being uncomfortable.
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- not yet.
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- sure? i don't understand what i could be unhappy with.
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- using image hosting websites because they keep getting blocked in my country and then i can't view or use anyone's website :(. but really i'd never tell anyone they can't do a certain way of coding. there's thing i don't like doing, but that doesn't mean they're bad practices. i'm sure some would way i do bad practises. i don't keep my css and html in separate documents because i just can't, i need to be able to see them in the same document and be able to scroll between them otherwise i just. can't. code. i can't cope with having to flick between documents/tabs.
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- idk.
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- i don't know what 'semantic html' means. i looked it up and it's just differennt elements? i've used elements that are 'generic' and elements that are 'semantic' on the same page. on most pages. are you not supposed too? i don't understand.
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- no, sorry. i use firefox and i don't check how it looks in other browsers. and if it was broken in google chrome i wouldn't fix it.
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- firefox. i hate google chrome with a passion, i used it for many years and it was so slow and lagging and crashed and i thought it was my pc becaue my pc was old but it wasn't it was google chrome. also you deserve to use ad blockers. whatever browser you use, i always recommend ublock origin and privacy badger. use both of them. i like that i can customise firefox (i have alucard from castlevania on my browser). i like it's multi-account container function where i can be signed into multiple accounts on the same website at the same time.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- windows uh whatever. 11? begrudgingly.
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- use it because i hate apple/mac more.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- nope.
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- don't like it. i get jumpscared easily and have tinnitus. i think it's just not super friendly, and if i'm brutally honest can make websites less disability friendly.
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- i like any sort of web communities. i'm in a bunch.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- i have many and want to make more. i don't care what someone's webshrine is about, i'll look at all sorts of webshrines even if i've never heard of what it's about. i just like seeing people being creative just for themselves and ranting about something they love.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- i don't think so. but i don't know what a cliché website would even look like or what cliché means in terms of websites.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- i don't really understand the question? i just want to have fun making my website. it's not homework i'm being graded on. i'll just do whatever as long as i'm having fun. and if anyone gets web graphics they like or resources or learns about a piece of media they were struggling to find information on because of my website, then that's a nice bonus.
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- yes. i have a degree in illustration and one of my jobs is my art, commissions, and running my art business. i draw a lot of my own assets and make a lot of web graphics.
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- i don't really use other people's resource pages? i took a long time to find my own all on my own just by searching the web and whenever i find anything new i add it to my resource page. whenever i need resources i just go to my own website. i have a section on my resource page to other people's resource pages, but i've never really taken the time to read any of them.
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- in terms of coding? or like... life in general? my autism doesn't do well with broad questions. if it's about coding specifically then... i don't think so? there's nothing i do on my website that i want to stop doing... if there was then i'd just stop doing it?
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- that you can do it. it's not as scary or impossible as you think. i don't remember how to do any coding from memory, a lot of my pages aren't made from scratch. you can start with, and even stick with, all the many free generators and layouts/themes people have made and and mess around editing the code to find out what does what.
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- try and keep everything in css unless for some reason there's one odd bit i need to change quickly and then i'll hardcode it.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- they actually bother me a little. if i love looking at a specific page on someone's website, or it's a source of information i want, etc, it's annoying to me that i can't have a url to get to that specific page and instead have to remember which sequence of buttons to click because i will not remember and then i struggle to ever find that page again. aesthetically they're fun, but it can cause me to lose pages a lot.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- as someone who used to use a free layout someone else made that used a flex grid... that was a nightmare to work with and kept breaking. i suppose that's not really a table is it? then i don't think i've ever seen a layout that uses a table for it's core base, or if it does i haven't noticed.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- subscribe to the idea? i don't understand the phrasing. column layouts exist, i've seen them, i've used them. i understand some people think they're boring or basic but i think you can get very creative with them. i saw someone once say they other neocities sites because they 'all looked the same with the same column layout' and that's just not true. there's lots of neocities websites that don't use sad-grl's layout generator, or something similar, and ones that do can still edit them to look fun and different. i've had a lot of fun playing around with sad-grl's layout generator and wouldn't have been able to take my first steps into coding without it. if we shoot people down when they're using 'basic' column layouts, they might lose motivation to ever work on coding anymore and ever create more complex websites.
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- html.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- no? i don't think so.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- never. i only make pages because i want to make a page about a specific thing. other than if you made layouts to sell or giveaway for free, i don't understand why or how you would make a layout with no idea of what to put on it?
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- i would hope somewhere in the middle.
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- yep. it's one of the best ways my brain can learn, is to see something cool, wonder how it was done, read the code and figure out which bit does what.
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- free layouts and editing different lines of the code to figure out what does what. reading other websites source code and figure out what does what. when i didn't know something i would google it and find the answer on w3 schools 99% of the time.
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- if i have it's by accident.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- i use them. and i get annoyed by them if i open them in my second monitor. my main monitor is 1080p and my second monitor... is an old 90s/2000s square monitor... so floating things appear in the wrong place on it. but who else is using one of those montiors. idk. and my website says its made for 1080p monitors.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- px.
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- i prefer serif and pixel fonts. but i don't have one singular favourite.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- i'm not sure. i really like having control over a project and doing things my way, my autism and stubbornness may struggle to work on a website with a second person unless we had dedicated pages we each worked on separately.
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- all the time.
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- i don't bookmark them in the sense that i add them to my firefox bookmarks... because my browser's bookmarks are a mess that i imported from the decade that i used chrome and i can't find anything in them. so i use the button wall on my website to 'bookmark' sites i like.
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- hm i don't know. i just hope people think it's neat. and if they find any of the things i write or make helpful, like my resource page, my web graphics guide, or anything else, then that makes me happy.
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- technology as in software and hardware? no. but i like collecting physical media, especially music. i have an old cassette walkman (not actually sony branded), a sony walkman cd player, sadly do not have my childhood cd player but bought a new one as an adult that also plays records and cassettes. don't know if that counts as technology. i like musical instruments too, including electronic ones, and used to collect them more when i was younger and would like to again.
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- idk man like... all the time.
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- no one. anyone. i suspect the nerds and gays and neurodivergents. but the site is made for my taste first, and if anyone else likes it then okay.
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- don't know what that is.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- no.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- don't know what that is.
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- yes, but i should probably delete it. because most of the views are probably from me.
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- no. never been on any forum, not even back when they were more frequent, just didn't know they existed.
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- yep. directly into the neocities editor.
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- i have no idea. but apparently so. to some.
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- old website work? no. old artwork i did as a tween? yeah.
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- i'd rather leave it up as an archive, especially given all the work and time i've put into my resource page and web graphics guide page.
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- idk. stuff about how i think and feel, sure. but i don't talk about like personal trauma or family stuff. apart from my partner <3.
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- well my best friend is my wife, duh. and she started a website, but i don't know if she intends to ever work on it again. but friend who has a website would be mr greenfogg.
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- i'm not sure i understand what that means in context of coding a website. i have images in my art gallery appear smaller than they actually are if you were to right click and view image in new tab.
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- i feel like i didn't understand some of them and am now worried someone's going to see those answers and think i'm stupid which makes me anxious to publish this. at the end of the day, my website's just for fun so don't take any errors or messy code you see too seriously. if you would have coded it different, okay, go code like that on your site. this one's mine.
