History
I started watching Supernatural around 2011 when I was 13 years old and related a lot to Lucifer, to feeling like the family disappointment, an outcast, someone who didn’t fit in, and would imagine myself as a hunter, friend or relative of the Winchesters, and imagined being with him. And then I was shamed by the internet into being embarrassed that I’d ever liked the show, and religious guilted into thinking I was going to face punishment for having liked Lucifer. I got back into Supernatural in 2024 when I made August. Letting go of the shame of liking the show, letting go of thinking I’m evil if I like a fictional depiction of the devil, having a character show Lucifer that he is worthy of being loved despite everything… means a lot to me. Lucifer means so much to me in a way I can’t describe. He teaches me how to love myself and believe that I deserve love. He is forever going to be a character that I drawn to in a way I struggle to describe, as if it’s something almost spiritual in a way.

I have a webshrine on this website for Lucifer that has a little mini essay on why I love him. The next few paragraphs are copied from that page:

“Seeing a character who had been outcast from his family, called an “abomination”, felt misunderstood and othered, was the black sheep of the family… These were all things I could relate to at 13/14 years old, when I first started watching the show. At the time I knew I was pansexual, but still felt like there was something wrong with me, something different, that I couldn’t work out but also felt like I couldn’t tell my family from fear of being cast out. The things were being trans and autistic, but I didn’t know that yet.

The show had changed from God being absent, to God helping them, to God being the final villain of the show and ultimately proving right everything Lucifer said about him. This changed Lucifer from someone who could have been misunderstood by his family and punished unjustly, to someone who’d actively been abandoned and potentially abused by his father (depending on whether you see putting a seal on your son that curses him into becoming evil and then leaving him to suffer instead of trying to help him as abusive, I personally do). Him being othered, not accepted by his family, hurt by a parent who refuses to acknowledge they did anything wrong… these are sadly all things I find very relatable and thus have always been drawn to him.

At first when I got back into Supernatural I let my own religious trauma and cringe culture judgement insist that it was embarrassing of teenage me to have liked Lucifer, but the more I got back into the show I couldn’t help but fall back in love with him again, perhaps most of all because I see him as someone damaged by his parents, a black sheep of the family, othered but deep inside desperately wants someone to love him. And despite the evils his character has committed (they are fictional evils after all), I see all of that and I see myself. I am all those things, I was all of those things and deep down I loved Lucifer because I wanted to believe I was capable of being loved. I suppose this all got a bit deep for commentary on a character from a silly show that the writers couldn’t be bothered to see any depth in by the end, but I’ll continue to see the depth in a character that I found comfort in as a very depressed teenager who needed to believe he could be loved.”

The entire mini essay and rant can be found on my Lucifer (SPN) webshrine.

Story

August was killed by a demon and his body abducted when he was 26. He was experimented on with the intent of creating an alternate long-lasting vessel for Lucifer in case Sam refused him, a vessel that wouldn’t need to give consent. His captors then injected a vial of Lucifer’s grace into August’s body, hoping this could in some way pull Lucifer from the cage and into August’s body, or create some sort of clone or extension of Lucifer. But instead, it resurrected August, but now with the powers of an archangel. No longer human, but not a ‘proper’ angel. He meets the Winchesters during the events of season 4 of the show.

His archangel powers are slow to grow, and as he didn’t grow up as a hunter, he has no knowledge of what powers an angel even has. He is a suitable alternate vessel for Lucifer and if he were to say yes to Lucifer, they wouldn’t burn through him like they do with Nick. If Lucifer’s grace were to be removed from August’s body, then August would die. It is keeping him alive. The scar on his chest is from where Lucifer’s grace entered his body.

August ends up bonding a lot with Sam due to both of them having initial connections to Lucifer that they didn’t get a choice in. ‘The Boy King of Hell’ and ‘The Boy with the Devil’s Grace’. Both of them deal with others distrusting them, or being disgusted in their existence, especially other angels.

Lucifer could feel August’s resurrection while he’s in the cage, though it cannot in any way free him from the cage. From the moment he breaks out, as well as wanting to find Sam, he seeks to also find August. His feelings are complicated. He should be disgusted that a human is walking around with his grace inside them when Lucifer never gave consent for that to happen. But he isn’t disgusted by Sam, who should understand him, and as he gets to know and watch over August more he realises perhaps his grace didn’t bond to August because of some correctly done ritual or successful experiment… but because his grace felt a bond with August. And having an alternate vessel in case Sam said no couldn’t hurt, right? He watches over August in real life, he visits August in his dreams. At first trying to convince August to say yes, manipulate him into saying yes… but August wasn’t bothered by Lucifer’s presence like he should be. August felt this connection between them. He felt drawn to Lucifer and ended up spending these dreams asking Lucifer questions. And Lucifer is lonely and starved of affection and kindness and this dead-alive human-angel boy was looking at him without disgust, wasn’t flinching when Lucifer tries to touch him, and he hadn’t had anyone react like this to him in a long time. It takes a long time for Lucifer to be okay with liking a human, and when he realises that he’s feeling love towards August it’s a whole can of worms of Lucifer feeling weak for it, being upset that a human could cause this, but also thinking August deserves more, someone kinder, someone less monstrous.

But of course eventually, with August likely having to be the one to make the first move, they do get together and be very gay, yay! To be more serious, they can feel and understand each other in a way no one else can, not just emotionally or physically, but because August has some of Lucifer’s grace they can feel each other’s emotions if they choose too. Both of them had never fallen in romantic love before each other, and Lucifer had never felt sexual attraction or desire to anyone until August.

AUs
The Devil's Vessel
Non-SPN universe AU. August is human living alone. Every night when he goes to sleep, the devil appears in his dreams. At first August doesn't know who this figure is, always taking on various forms, slowly learning about them. Once August is able to move and communicate in his dreams, and Lucifer reveals who he is, then Lucifer starts trying to convince August to be his vessel for him to bring about the apocalypse. [I have plans to turn this into a visual novel and hope I'm able too one day.]
The End AU Sam!Luci
Takes place in the alternate future from Season 5 Episode 4 'The End'. Sam has said yes to Lucifer, so Lucifer is possessing Sam's body. August in this AU is angrier and more vengeful at the humans and demons who experimented on him and has become apathetic to whether humanity is killed. August loves Lucifer, but cares little for anyone else anymore. They're toxically obsessed with each other. August sees Lucifer as his god, Lucifer sees August as his prince, his pet, but still considers August his only equal.
The End AU August!Luci
Takes place in the alternate future from Seasn 5 Episode 4 'The End'. August has said yes to Lucifer instead of Sam and the same events play out.

Vampire AU
Chuck (God) being a vampire lord and all the angels from the main universe are his fledgling's in this AU. August is also a vampire in this AU, but not onen of Chuck's fledglings. To parallell main August having Lucifer's grace, August in this was turned into a vampire with blood stolen from Lucifer. So he is Lucifer's fledgling, but without Lucifer's knowledge or either's consent. Chuck is not good to his fledglings, ruling over them, and not against mind controlling them to do what he wants. August will help Lucifer break out of this abusive coven.

Sam and August are a couple and each other’s soulmates, and Lucifer ends up catching feelings for both of them when they befriend him and feeling guilty about it. He initially keeps his feelings to himself, scared that he’ll ruin his friendship with both of them, or that it could ruin August and Sam’s relationship with each other. He doesn’t let people touch him, he says he isn’t interested in soulmates when the reality is he’s scared of being loved, and doesn’t think he deserves love. August’s fingers brush against his one day as he hands Lucifier something, their soulmarks react proving that they’re soulmates, and Lucifer runs off. Gabriel has to show up to Lucifer’s apartment to get him to open the door, revealing that August and Sam are outside and wanting to talk to him. August assures Lucifer that he won’t ruin anything, that they both want him even if he’s only soulmates with August and not Sam. Lucifer allows Sam to touch him, revealing that they are also soulmates.
