Pullip is a line of fashion dolls created by Korean artist Cheonsang Cheonha. They were originally made and sold by JUN Planning of Japan from 2003, until they filed for bankruptcy in 2009. The doll line survived and was sold to Groove Inc of South Korea who are still making the dolls to this day. Most Pullip dolls are original designs, though they often collaborate with fashion brands and have licensed characters from anime, manga, films, video games, real life people and more.
Pullip is the name of a character who has a canonical personality, while also being the name of the doll line. Think of how Barbie is both the character and the name of the doll line, and how there can be a Barbie doll of Barbie the character, but there are also Barbie dolls of characters from The Lord of the Rings, Twilight and Scooby Doo.
Alongside the main female doll Pullip (푸리프), there are other doll lines in the series. To compare them to Barbie once more, it’s the same as how the Barbie line also has Skipper and Kelly (Barbie’s sisters) and Ken (Barbie’s boyfriend). Pullip has had two boyfriend boyfriends: Namu (나무), who was retired in 2005, and his replacement Taeyang (태양). There is also Taeyang’s little sister Dal (달), her best friend Byul (별), Pullip’s younger brother Isul (이슬), and Pullip’s future daughter Yeolume (열매).
There are also lines of miniature dolls though none of these lines seem to still be in production, they are: Little Pullip, Little Pullip+, Little Taeyang+ Little Dal+ and Little Byul+. In 2023 they released a new line called Woori Pullip, a slightly smaller version of Pullip and each of these dolls were remakes of some of their dolls from 2003-2004. There were also ‘Make It Own’ a line of blank doll kits you could customise to make your own Pullip, ‘My Select Pullip’ a line of Pullips from 2012 dressed in only towels with no clothes and ‘Crafting Doll’ a line from 2024 again dressed in only towels but with a new face sculpt, ‘Angel Pullip’ and ‘Angel Dal’ that were released for a small time in 2008, and various accessories.
All the dolls in the Pullip universe are 1:6 scale, which is the same scale as other fashion dolls like Barbie, Bratz, Blythe, Monster High, etc. Because of this they often can fit into clothing from these other doll lines. Similar to BJDs and Blythes, Pullips often are customised by their collectors via changing their wig, eye chips, repainting their faces and moving their heads onto different, normally more posable, bodies.
All the dolls in the Pullip line come with movable eyes. They move via a mechanism on the back of their heads that allows you to slide their eyes side to side, and blink via buttons on the back of their heads. Pullips with type 1-3 bodies can move and blink their eyes, but for the type 4 body they added a notch on the blinking buttons that allowed them to stay in place so they could keep their eyes closed. Current Pullips, Taeyangs and Isuls can move and blink their eyes, whereas Dals, Byuls and Yeolumes can only move their eyes and not blink. For more information on the differences between body-types you can look at the pages within this shrine of each of the doll lines within the Pullip series. Every doll comes with a doll stand and a collectable card.
To the left is a list of all dolls released under the Pullip series, and other dolls made and released by Jun Planning and Groove Inc. Each of these pages has a character bio for each doll, as well as a complete list of every doll every released, including cancelled dolls and prototypes. I have tried my best to gather correct information from other websites and blogs, though many are now down and only some were accessible via the waybackmachine. Everywhere I got information and images from are credit on the ‘credits’ page.
Pullips are still being made and sold, though it seems some of the old shops selling them are either shutting down or already closed. There were only three new Pullips released in 2024 (not counting the two Woori Pullips or the five Crafting Dolls) and one Taeyang. Every other doll character hasn’t had a new doll in the last couple years and it’s unknown if Groove Inc has retired these doll lines completely.
Every doll in each Pullip series has a quote that describes the doll or their personailty in some way. These quotes are called 'feel like so' as they usually end in that phrase.
